Mini Shopaholic: A Novel by Sophie Kinsella
Publication date/ Length: 2010 / 417 pages
First line: OK. Don’t panic. I’m in charge.
Synopsis (from Publisher’s Weekly): In the latest installment to the wildly popular Shopaholic series (Shopaholic and Baby; etc.), Rebecca Brandon returns with willful two-year-old Minnie, who has taken after her mother in her fierce determination and her addiction to luxury brands. When the financial crisis finally hits the Brandon family, Rebecca vows to stop shopping until she’s worn everything in her closet at least three times; Luke scrambles for new business directions; and Minnie remains exceptionally difficult. Still, Rebecca wants to throw Luke a surprise birthday bash, but planning it behind his back and on a budget proves almost impossible.
Review: I know, I know… Either you love Becky Bloomwood or… you don’t. I happen to just love her, so when my sister bought her latest — in hardcover! — and then passed it along, I knew I had an unproductive few days ahead of me…
And this latest installment is vintage Becky – her obsessions with brands, fibbing, denial, and frivolity is in full-force — and delightfully fun! I enjoyed her misadventures as a mother and revelled in her fantasy world of endless resources, forgiving friends, and lack of consequences. Reading Kinsella is like eating a lovely truffle – momentarily pleasurable, insubstantial and decadent. And I hate to shop! But Becky’s “voice” is so unique and loveable and a few hours of fantasy-land can be so good for the soul.
So, if you love Becky, then you will love this novel. But, be warned… little else will get done for a few days!
