Inspired by a question asked on the Millions blog a few weeks ago… I thought I would ask everyone:
What is the first book you remember simply loving?
Hard to choose one, isn’t it?! I think I have to pick The Fourteen Bears in Summer and Winter by Evelyn Scott,
which my mom recently gave me for Christmas, immediately sparking a profusion of tears. I just loved that bear family and how different each of the bear siblings were — and how they decorated their trees to mirror their interests.
Never did get tired of reading about them “walk paw-and-paw through the forest.”
What about you? What’s your earliest memory of a book that sparked your passion for reading?

The first book I couldn’t put down, the first chapter book I read in third grade (which, by today’s standards, seems late), the book that sent me on a reading frenzy for the next 34 years: Half Magic by Edward Eager. I still love it and everything else he ever did, and the perfect illustrations. I still feel excited when I see the old covers of his books.
I best remember Little Black Sambo (probably very politically incorrect today!), where the tigers chased one another until they turned to butter for Little Black Sambo’s pancakes. My grandfather read this book over and over to me while I sat in his lap. He also read to me from Readers’ Digest Condensed Books, whichever volume he was reading at the time. Once I learned to read, I devoured everything I could find in the bookmobile and school library myself!
Thank you, Anna and Linda!!
