This week’s list of lovely summer finds from the Reader’s Advisor embraces a subject near and dear to my sport’s loving heart: Baseball!  I do love America’s favorite past-time — the pace, the rhythm, the bursts of orchestrated activity, the quiet lulls, the opportunity to spend 3 or 4 hours outside…

Anyway, I am thrilled that I haven’t read any of the following picks!  My husband and I really enjoyed Moneyball by Michael Lewis, which is not on the list, and I hope to convince him to listen to a few of these as we drive to the cabin (when the Brewers aren’t playing, of course…).

Summerland by Michael Chabon (Yes, that Michael Chabon…  with whom I’m a bit obsessed…)entitled Summers Best Baseball Reads

The Entitled by Frank Deford (A brilliant writer you may have read in Sports Illustrated or heard on NPR…)

The Brothers K by David James Duncan (loosely based on the Dostoevsky masterpiece that I finally finished…)

Shoeless Joe by W. P. Kinsella

The Natural by Bernard Malamud (loved the Robert Redford movie…)

Has anyone read any of these baseball classics?  I would love to know where to begin!

  1. I read and absolutely adored Chabon’s Summerland. I too am a little obsessed with Chabon, but then I started reading The Yiddish Policeman’s Union and I couldn’t make it past the 50-page test. Did you read it? Did you like it? I’m willing to try again.
    Anyway, Summerland was great.

  2. Hi! I’ve still only read Clay, but I’m waiting for the other 2 from the library! I’m so glad you enjoyed Summerland — I’m hoping we can listen to it when we drive to Colorado–if it comes in time!
