Synopsis (from the jacket cover): In the aftermath of the long breakup of her marriage, Neve Halloran and her teenage daughter Mickey are making a new life together amid the austere beauty of Rhode Island’s South County. Captivated by a fragile wildlife sanctuary, Mickey will move toward womanhood in the company of a lonely boy who shares her abiding love for the windswept coastline. Neve will find herself drawn to a man who has devoted his life to the sanctuary yet is unable to share the pain of a devastating loss — or reconnect with the father who still bears the scars of World War II.
Review: Last weekend at the cabin I had one book with me — Eating Animals by Jonathan Safran Foer – I knew I needed to finally read this significant and highly regarded work. As a 22 year vegetarian, I was a bit apprehensive, which is why I had postponed reading it until now. Foer’s writing was marvelous — witty, accessible, and disarming — and after the first few pages, I knew he was someone I would enjoy spending time with and looked forward to reading other works he had written.
He first outlined the very philosophical theories that convinced me to stop eating animals in my freshman philosophy course 22 years ago. So far, so good – but not for long… He then described finding a puppy on a New York City street and adopted her (“George”) on the spot, even though he was not a dog lover by experience. He then started to ruminate about the sport of fishing — a pasttime even children and non-hunters can stomach and enjoy. Then, he imagined how people would react if George was treated in the same manner as a fish… and I couldn’t decide whether to throw up or cry first.
Needless to say, I was then at the cabin without anything to read… or so I thought… until I happened to find an old paperback by Luanne Rice, long forgotten and never read, and turned my attention to what ended up a lovely novel about… animal lovers! Or bird lovers, to be exact. I happily spent the better part of a morning and afternoon reading about sweet, innocent adolescents who decide to fight a greedy capitalist in his attempt to disrupt the watery grave of long-dead German sailors as well as the habitat of a snowy owl. I cannot remember ever reading Rice before, but enjoyed this fast-paced, idealistic novel. It did seem a bit long, quite honestly, but otherwise quite pleasureable. The historical aspects of how WW II affected the “survivors” as well as the casualties added an unexpected level of significance to this otherwise character-driven novel.
So, if Winter sounds appealing, I will hold a special “Sunday Salon” giveaway and send this gentle paperback to one interested reader — simply leave me a comment! And, has anyone gotten past the first 50 pages of Eating Animals? If so, I would love to hear your impressions!

I’d love to read this! I live in Rhode Island, by the ocean, but in the East Bay area rather than South County. However, being such a small state, I know the area well. I love reading books set in Rhode Island. Thanks so much for sharing your copy!
