Review: I accepted this review copy because I tend to read dark, brooding, literary novels – or memoirs written by dark, brooding individuals with literary aspirations. Waxed, on the other hand, screamed “light summer sit-in-the-sun-on-the-deck fun!” And, for the most part, it delivered on this promise.
Waxed embraces Sex-in-the-City sass with a splash of Devil Wears Prada venom. New York City preens like a starring character, but never quite outshines the three main characters, who are likeable and flawed.
However, if I had been the editor I would have cut the first two chapters which focus on the daily happenings in a waxing salon. FYI, the customers in Waxed are not getting their legs or brows done, (ahem), and I really had no interest in learning that much about why those Sports Illustrated models can wear such skimpy “bathing” suits. But, after the first two chapters, the character development really kicked in and the remaining 250 pages focused on the women’s hearts and minds, rather than their much less interesting nether-regions.
So, do I recommend Waxed? If you are in the mood to spend a few days in NYC with three engaging women, then yes! But, do I think this would be appropriate for a book club? Probably not…
