A Hidden Affair by Pam Jenoff
Release date: 2010 / 297 pages
First line: I gaze across the veranda, beyond the rows of yachts and sailboats bobbing in the Porte de Monaco toward the sparkling Mediterranean waters.
Synopsis (from back cover): “Still reeling from the betrayal of those closest to her and the revelation that her college boyfriend Jared is still alive, Jordan Weiss resigns from her State Department post and sets out to find him. Her search takes her all over Europe and embroils her in a wine counterfeiting ring that involves a very valuable, very rare, vintage than disappeared during the Nazi occupation of France during WWII…”
Review: What a happy surprise to find this sequel waiting in my mailbox after the 4th of July weekend! I had read Jenoff’s first novel (Almost Home review) and been swept away by the characterization and setting.
Fortunately, this follow-up matches its predecessor in pace and depth of characterization. The setting includes a variety of European countries, from Monaco to Austria to Greece, and is so perfect for the big screen. I rarely see movies of books I’ve already read, but I would love to see the setting, so lovingly described in Almost Home and so glamourous in Affair, portrayed in spectacular technicolor. I’m not sure who I would cast as Jordan — I think Jenoff is smart to leave her appearance to our imagination, allowing the reader to vicariously become a globe-tracking, courageous ex-secret agent.
I cannot reveal much about the plot without spoiling the delightful twists and turns of this well-wrought tale of suspense. But I enthusiastically recommend this follow-up thriller as a delightful summer read, and no need to read Almost Home first. Jenoff provides enough scaffolding so the two could be read in either order…

Such a great response to this novel! I’m so glad… Just wish I had many more copies to give away, too!
Renee — You do not need to read the first one, but this novel “solves” the mystery of the first one a bit so you may want to…
Theresa — On Saturday I posted Neva as the winner of last week’s Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, but I’m still waiting for her response so I may have to choose a new winner! We’ll see…
I would love to have a chance to win a copy of this book. If you choose another winner for Boy Who Harnessed the Wind can I be entered in that too? I have been wanting to read that book for a long time! thanks!
