Yesterday I received an email from the Pulitzer First Edition website with an updated short-list:
| 1. | My Father’s Tears: And Other Stories by John Updike |
| 2. | Lark & Termite by Jayne Anne Phillips |
| 3. | Homer & Langley by E.L. Doctorow |
| 4. | The Humbling by Philip Roth |
| 5. | Let the Great World Spin by Colum McCann |
| 6. | The Maple Stories by John Updike |
| 7. | American Salvage by Bonnie Jo Campbell |
| 8. | Spooner by Pete Dexter |
| 9. | Generosity: An Enhancement by Richard Powers |
| 10. | In Other Rooms, Other Wonders by Daniyal Mueenuddin |
| 11. | The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver |
| 12. | A Good Fall by Ha Jin |
| 13. | The Red Convertible by Louise Erdrich |
| 14. | Chronic City by Jonathan Lethem |
| 15. | Dear Husband by Joyce Carol Oates |
Any thoughts? I’ve only read The Lacuna so far and it would not be my choice…

Loved “Let the Great World Spin”
Couldn’t get through “Homer and Langley”
I liked “The Maple Stories” but think it’s a little reductive. It follows a couple through their long marriage and divorce. I liked it but didn’t learn anything new and all the casual infidelity was grating. American Salvage is great!
That’s all I’ve read. Kelly
…only two I’ve read are “In Other Rooms, Other Wonders” and “Generosity.” Very different books, but both very worthy nominations!
I haven’t read anything but The Lacuna either, and I definitely would not call it Pulitzer worthy. I can’t believe Abraham Verghese’s Cutting for Stone isn’t on there.
Thank you for the suggestions!! Now I can re-order my TBR list a bit…
So interested in this list! Mainly because I haven’t read any of them. I really need to get through the current TBR pile a bit faster.
Thanks for the interesting post, as always.
