I’m so looking forward to reading everyone’s comments about this week’s BTT…

Last Saturday (May 2nd) was Free Comic Book Day! In celebration of comics and graphic novels, some suggestions:
- Do you read graphic novels/comics? Why do/don’t you enjoy them?
- How would you describe the difference between “graphic novel” and “comic”? Is there a difference at all?
- Please recommend some titles you consider landmark/”canonical”.
Graphic novels… Comic books… Literary works of art or picture books for the strong of heart?
Here is my experience with graphic novels: Maus. That’s it. I really resist reading this genre, and I’m not sure why! Recently, a member of my book club (hi Eve!) recommended that we read Gaiman’s recent award-winning The Graveyard Book, and I just couldn’t get excited about it.
So, why is this? Should I just fight my resistance and jump into this genre? I would love to hear a variety of perspectives on this topic…!

I’m with you on The Graveyard Book and I did read the whole thing. But it’s no a graphic novel.
I say, read what you want to without guilt. I see no reason be feel pressured to read one particular genre if you don’t want to.
Hi CB! I haven’t heard from you in a while!! Thank you for the comment — and the support
Of course, we do tend to like a lot of the same books…! Good point, though!
I’ve been reading Manga since junior high…so its a hard habit to dismiss…so I love manga as much as novel/books.
Read Craig Thompson’s Blankets. It’s an award-winning graphic novel about a teenager in Wisconsin growing up and falling in love in a fundamental Christian household. Thompson uses the genre so well to tell a story that is familiar and heartbreaking. I think you’d like it very much.
I don’t read a ton of graphic novels, but I loved Epileptic by David B. It was just incredible.
Thank you for the recommendations, Jess and Anna — It always helps to know where to start…
