Do you give books as gifts? To everyone? Or only to select people?
How do you feel about receiving books as gifts?
Yes, Yes, and Yes, Please!!
I actually love giving books as gifts — especially since I’ve joined the blogosphere. Throughout the year, whenever I find a book that I think someone will love, I save it for future reference. So far, I think I have gifted books most often to my husband, father, and grandmother. My mom usually buys books that she will enjoy right away — and then passes them on to me, thankfully!
In the past month I have come across a couple of books that I think a cousin or two might enjoy. However, my cousins and I give gifts via Secret Santa since there are so many of us — so it would be quite a surprise if I all of a sudden sent one of my cousins a book! But, those are the best surprises, aren’t they!
Now, the trick is… we may or may not know someone’s taste in reading. And books can accumulate so quickly — as we well know. Plus, who wants to feel “obligated” to read a book we know deep down we won’t enjoy?
So, giving books as a gift is a bit of a risk. But I like to think of it as a form of matchmaking — the challenge of trying to match another’s personality to an author’s is thrilling when we get it right, isn’t it!?
So, I will continue to give books as gifts…
How about you all? And do you enjoy receiving books as gifts?

I too said yes, yes and yes!
Books are always a pleasure..gifting as well as receiving..

Booking through treat
Booking through generosity
I enjoy getting books, but I understand what you mean when you talk about the obligation of having to read one that would not have been your choice.

I am giving books this year to almost everyone on my Christmas shopping list. I like to think that I’m good at picking the perfect book. However, I don’t like receiving books. They are usually well-intentioned but miss the mark.
My answer was also full of YESes!
You’re right, sometimes it’s tricky to pick a book for another person. I tended to go broad, with a non-fiction book in an area of interest, plus a little non-book extra (a book of muffin recipes and a muffin tin, for example)
