Last month I wrote a post on a website I had found — what should I read next — that was a great idea in theory, but disappointing in reality. Well, I just stumbled upon an even better site — Gnod.net

The site asked me for three authors I enjoyed, and I listed Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and Barbara Kingsolver. (I chose these three simply because they came to mind first).
Here is what Gnod recommended:
- Anne Tyler
- Margaret Atwood
- Isabel Allende
- Alice Munro
- Anita Diamant
- Joyce Carol Oates
- Jane Smiley
- Carol Shields
- Jane Urquhart
- Ann Patchett
- Sue Monk Kidd
I had not heard of Jane Urquhart, but I really like all of the others. The site recommended specific titles, too, even though I only specified three favorite authors.

Curious, I tried one more cycle, using the two authors I have most recently read: Michael Chabon and Dave Eggers.
Here were the suggestions:
- John Kennedy Toole
- Gore Vidal
- Faye Weldon
- Dawn Powell
- Ian McKellan
- Barbara Tuchman
- J. Frank Dobie
- James Fenimore Cooper
- Guillame Appollinaire
- Robert Lee Burke
- W. Richard Stevens
- Howard Norman
Now, I wasn’t as familiar with these authors, but from what I could tell by scanning the titles/covers, I would say the site did a pretty good job. (I wasn’t really playing fair, since Eggers writes non-fiction).
It appears the site will also recommend movies and music, too — check it out!
