Best Book Club Books of 2007 — Non-fiction!

As promised, here is part 2 of Time‘s best reads from 2007 — non-fiction, this time!

10. Here if You Need Me by Kate Braestrup — My mom’s book club read this recently; she gives it a big “thumb’s down” but I haven’t read it yet

9. The Center Cannot Hold: Journey Through Madness by Elyn R. Saks — the title sure is alluring… as is the synopsis: valedictorian with schizophrenia

8. The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court by Jeffrey Toobin — also sounds fascinating!

7. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life by Barbara Kingsolver — one of my very favorite writers and subjects

6. Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life by Steve Martin — bound to be funny…

5. The Rest is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century by Alex Ross — technology meets music…  I really hate Schoenberg so I’ll probably skip this one…

4. Legacy of Ashes: The History of the CIA by Tim Weiner – Saw the Good Shepherd, so I’ll probably skip this one, too…

3. A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah – Sounds very heavy…

2. Life of Picasso: The Triumphant Years, 1917 – 1932 by John Richardson — Bound to be interesting

1. The World Without Us by Alan Weisman

I started “The World Without Us” but did not finish it. Excellent concept – but I thought the prose was too dense – to the point of almost being unreadable. I used to feel guilty about walking out of movies or not finishing $15 books – but life is too short.

  2. Kristen says:

Thanks, Joe! Good to know… It IS freeing to walk away from something that would otherwise ruin a couple of hours… the money is worth that freedom in many cases!

Some of those sound interesting. It’s kind of a drag to see the movie before reading the book, usually the book is better than the movie.
